Gavin Schmidt

Born and raised in Broken Hill, with his mother, father, brother & sister, completed his schooling at St Joseph’s High School and landed a job as apprentice printer at the local paper Barrier Daily Truth. Like a lot of BH people got involved in local sporting groups and activities, finished his apprenticeship resigned, grabbed a backpack and took off overseas to travel the world. Came back to Australia & Broken Hill, started back at BDT, over the years worked through various positions. A printer for 5 years and took over as Photographer June 1988. Got married to Faye 1995. Along the way as photographer won a few Country Press Association awards for sport & news photography, had his work published in newspapers and magazine in Australia and Internationally. At the invitation of Broken Hill City Council held an exhibition that ran for 4 weeks, after 25 years as photographer with changing times in the newspaper industry moved to Circulation Manager and then onto General Manager until deciding to semi-retire in Jan 2021.
